How to Deal With Anxiety When Nerved About Promotion

Career Advice

While a promotion can be a huge step, it can also be scary because it means you have to assume a lot more responsibilities. You can reduce anxiety by being prepared. This could involve speaking with colleagues in the same position as you or researching the new job online. Another option is to ask a friend or colleague for help if you have received a similar promotion.

Fear of being the next kid on the block

For some people, fear of becoming the new kid on town can be very worrying. New jobs aren’t as terrible as we think they are. Instead of becoming paralyzed by the fear, take it as an opportunity to meet new people and experience new things. Join new clubs or groups outside your workplace. This will allow you to practice meeting new people which will prove useful when applying for promotions.

Prepare. This is the best way for you to get past your fear of becoming the new kid on campus when you're promoted. Do your research. Ask your coworkers to compare you with others in the same job or look online. You will get a better idea of the job you'll be doing.

Fear of not knowing where you are

One of the most common fears people have when doing a promotion is the fear of not knowing what they're doing. Although this is normal, it should not stop you from trying. It's possible that you are more prepared than you realize. So don't let fear get in the way of doing what is best for you. You can overcome your fear by doing some research on the new job that you are about to accept. By talking to people in the same position, you'll be able to gain insight into the different aspects of the new role.

You might find it beneficial to have a conversation with someone else who isn’t working in the same environment. This person can give you a perspective on your fears and help you overcome them. Reflection on your past accomplishments can be helpful. It is important to remember that you have worked very hard in order to get here.

Fear of being the new boss

Fear of being the new boss can be a common feeling. Many new leaders are confronted with difficult decisions and face many challenges. They must learn to identify their own values and how to manage unspoken expectations. While some people are able to jump in and get things done immediately, others feel anxious and uncertain. It can be one of the greatest career challenges, but it can also be a rewarding experience.

Be prepared to deal with anxiety. Talk to colleagues who are in the exact same position as yours about the new role. You can also do research online about the new job.

Identifying your strengths and your challenges

You must clearly describe your strengths and limitations when applying to a promotion. This will allow you to stand out from the rest of the candidates. Your strengths could range from your teamwork skills and project management abilities, to your verbal communication or presentation skills. Your weaknesses could range from poor listening to disorganization.

Your company's strengths are what you do well. These can be intangible like brand attributes or concrete like your unique selling point. These could also be people-related such as strong leadership and an exceptional engineering team. You may also face financial or organizational limitations.

Developing a persona or alter ego

You can use a persona (or alter ego) for many purposes. It can give you perspective and help you look at problems from a different angle. To reach your career goals you can also use your alter self. To help you get promoted or if you feel anxious, you can portray the persona you want.

There are many personas you can create. Then choose the one that best represents your personality. Your persona can be a fictitious character, a superhero or someone else. You could even be your alter ego in a story or book. You might even discover a side of yourself you didn't know existed.
